Overview

Playa La Jungla is a quiet snorkel spot in the Guánica State Forest, about a 20-minute walk from Playa Santa, with small sandy coves among mangroves and calm, shallow water. Heads up: there are no lifeguards, facilities or trash cans, and the dirt access road is rough (a 4x4 is recommended). The gate is open Tuesday to Sunday, 7am to 5pm (2025), with a $2 suggested donation; DRNA and a local nonprofit have co-managed the beach since 2015. Bring snorkel gear: rays and sea turtles are possible near the mangroves, though a 2023 report photographed coral bleaching in the area.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

Access

  • gated: open Tuesday–Sunday 7am–5pm (no cars after 4pm); park outside and walk about 20 minutes or drive in on a bumpy dirt road; $2 per person donation (Guánica residents and under-12s exempt); DRNA and US Fish & Wildlife Service restoring mangroves and dunes; DRNA may cap visitor numbers when crowded[1]
  • in a protected zone where DRNA began controlling entry[2]
  • since 2015 co-managed by DRNA and the NGO Protectores de Cuencas, which restored the beach (access road stabilised, parking, dune restoration, reforestation); a $2 donation (not a fee) applies (2021)[5]
  • a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended; access roads deteriorated and unpaved (2025)[6]
  • DRNA 2008 buoy study: 'La Jungla' is a day-use recreation area with medium use pressure, without mooring buoys at the time; the study recommends placing buoys there[8]
