Great barracuda

Sphyraena barracuda · Also called: barracuda, Picúa

Protection: Selling barracuda is banned in Puerto Rico.[1]

Facts

  • Long silver body with a pointed snout, a jutting lower jaw, dark bars on the upper side and black spots on the lower sides.[2]
  • Curious. It often follows snorkelers and divers, usually alone, and hunts by ambush during the day.[2]
  • Attacks are rare. Most happen when it goes for a speared fish or mistakes something shiny, like a dive knife, for a fish.[2]
  • Large barracuda can carry ciguatera toxin, which causes food poisoning.[2]
