Overview
Playa Buyé in Cabo Rojo is a calm-water snorkel spot reached by PR-307. Heads up: there are no lifeguards, so you swim at your own risk; boats sometimes anchor at the quieter north end on weekends; and a 2026 local guide says most of the once-colourful reef's coral is dead. The same guide says the water is clearer on the north side, where a coral wall can be snorkeled and schools of reef fish are often seen; seagrass and starfish lie along the beach (leave the starfish where they are). A roped area keeps swimmers in shallow water, and a 2019 newspaper report described litter on the seabed after Holy Week.[1][2][3][4]

Habitat & marine life
- most of the once-colourful reef's coral is dead (guide blames overfishing, development and lack of protection); seagrass further along the beach[1]
- schools of colourful reef fish[1]
- starfish along the shore (guide asks visitors not to remove or move them)[1]
Marine life is what sources report having seen or commonly seeing — not a guarantee.
Access
- calm water, wide sand; access problems and structures in the maritime zone (2007)[5]
- access via PR-307 and a paved municipal road; calm-water beach marked for bathers (2002)[6]
- shallow roped swimming area; entry free through the campground gate off PR-307 (km 4.8, Calle Buyé); boats sometimes anchor at the quieter north end on weekends; more litter in summer and holidays[1]
- large roped-off swimming area with calm, clear water; houses and a small resort block much of the old beach access; seasonal kiosks, paid showers and parking[2]
- reached by PR-307; calm Caribbean water without strong currents[3]
- clear water, few waves, easy access; busiest in the afternoons[7]
Snorkeling
- snorkeling: a local snorkeler's regular spot; in April 2019 he found a layer of litter on the seabed after Holy Week[4]
- snorkeling: on the north side of Buyé the water is clearer and a coral wall can be snorkeled; schools of colourful fish often seen[1]
