Overview
Cayo Afuera, the fishermen's name for the islet labelled Cayo Real on maps, is a snorkel spot a few hundred feet across the bay from Playa Esperanza on Vieques. Heads up: an older travel guide warned against swimming over unless you are a strong swimmer visible to passing boats; local operators run kayak-and-snorkel tours there, and one rates its tour intermediate to advanced. A 2009 DRNA reserve plan includes the cay in the Bahía Bioluminiscente de Vieques Natural Reserve, notes snorkeling over its fringing reefs and seagrass around the rocky bottom, and says commercial fishing takes place on its south side; check current DRNA rules. Visitor guides mention antler coral, nurse sharks and occasional manatees.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
