Caribbean spiny lobster

Panulirus argus · Also called: spiny lobster, Langosta, langosta común, langosta espinosa

Protection: DRNA rules: minimum carapace length 3.5 inches, no egg-bearing females, and no spears or hook gaffs.[1]

Facts

  • No big front claws. It has forward-pointing spines, long horn-like antennae and two large cream spots on top of the second tail segment.[2]
  • Active at night. By day it shelters in reef dens and crevices, and it waves its long antennae to scare off predators.[2]
  • Divers who catch lobster without a boat must check the size right where they catch it and release undersized ones at once.[1]
